Please note: Pools, Electric bikes & Electric Scooters, household appliances, and mattresses must be recommended by a medical professional with credentials to diagnose autism. To view the list of accepted medical credentials and who can write referral letters, please see our Required Document list below.
 
In order to request an Electric bike or scooter, applicant (child or young adult) must be 16 years or older. 
 

Grant Overview 

Ben’s Fund provides financial assistance to children and young adults with autism in Washington state to help them access equipment and services they might otherwise be able to obtain. 
Families can apply for up to $1,000 per year, per child, to support the needs of their child or young adult.

 

Who Can Apply

ℹ️ Families must submit the application themselves, or young adults. Service providers are welcome to assist in the process, but may not apply on behalf of the families or create Submittable accounts.

 

When to Apply

Applications are accepted and awarded quarterly: Jan. , Apr. , July , Oct. The application will close once we reach the maximum number of complete applications for the quarter. This fills quickly, so please apply as close to the opening date as possible.
 
Our Grant opens on or just after the 1st of the month at 10:00 am PST. We adjust our opening dates for weekends, holidays and organizational closures to ensure staff can are available to assist applicants.

Application Assistance

 
Please contact Ben’s Fund if you need help with your application, we are happy to assist. Families must submit the application themselves, although service providers can assist with the process. Please note service providers cannot submit applications on behalf of applicants. 
 

Eligibility

To be Eligible you must:

 
  • Be between 0–25 years old
  • Be a Washington state resident
  • Have a confirmed diagnosis of autism
  • Have a household income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level
  • Request items are considered a medical necessity for autism
  • Provide all Required Documents
  •  

Required Documents

  • To apply for a Ben’s Fund grant, you must upload all required documents listed below when you submit your application. 
  • Please review the information carefully – incomplete applications cannot be submitted. 
  • We can only accept one file per upload. If your document is more than one page, please submit as a PDF, or Word doc.
  • If your document is a single page and you are uploading it as a jpeg, the picture must be clear and cropped with nothing in the background. 
  • Gather all documents before you apply. 
  • 💡Tip Make sure all of your documents are prepared and saved in one folder on your computer. Mark your calendar for the next grant opening, and try to apply as soon as it becomes available to secure a spot.

Please list all household members, then in as many words as you feel comfortable, tell us about your child or your young adult and how the requested equipment or services will support their autism journey. 

 

 

✅ You can either type your family story directly in the online application or upload it as a file. 

A) The diagnosis must be documented in a diagnostic full report and include:
  • Applicants name and date of birth
  • Confirmation of an autism diagnosis ( a provisional diagnosis is not accepted)
  • Service Providers signature ( digital signatures are accepted)
 
 B) If an official diagnosis is not available, an official letter on letterhead, and dated within one year from a qualified professional can be accepted. 
 
We accept the following credentials to diagnose in alignment in Washington State.
 
(i) A licensed neurologist;
(ii) A licensed psychiatrist;
(iii) A licensed psychologist;
(iv) A licensed developmental and behavioral pediatrician;
(v) A center of excellence as defined in WAC 182-531A-0200; or
(vi) One of the following professionals associated with an autism center or developmental center:
 (A) A licensed physician;
(B) An ARNP;
(C) A physician assistant; or
(D) A naturopathic physician.
 
❌Note: School IEPS are not accepted

💡Tip: An accepted professional who diagnoses autism can confirm the diagnosis and provide the referral in the same letter. 

To qualify, your family’s household income must be at or below 400% of the current Federal Poverty Level ( FPL), based on household size. Households includes everyone living together and sharing living costs ( parents, children, dependents, extended family). Please see the FPL chart below.

 

You must submit either A or B, plus C if applicable. 

 

A. If you file taxes

Submit your 2024 or 2025 IRS-Filed Tax Return (Form 1040) for all household members -showing dependents.

If you get SSI, you still need to submit your 1040.

 

 

B) If you did NOT file Taxes

Submit your 2026 SSI Award Letter, dated with the last 90 days, showing your child as the beneficiary.

 

C) You must also upload documentation for any additional income not listed on your 1040, including:

    • Child Support
    • Social Security
    • SSDI
    • Pensions
    • 1040s for all household members, if separate

 

Please have these documents ready to upload.

 

❌If you do NOT file a 1040 tax return and do NOT receive SSI: You will need to file a 1040 tax return before you can apply.

For a family of 2: Adjusted Gross Annual Income: $84,600

For a family of 3: Adjusted Gross Annual Income: $106,600

For a family of 4: Adjusted Gross Annual Income: $128,600

For a family of 5: Adjusted Gross Annual Income: $150,600

For a family of 6: Adjusted Gross Annual Income: $172,600

For a family of 7 +: Adjusted Gross Annual Income: $194,600

 

Please Note

 

  • Young adults 18–25 must include household income if living with guardians
  • If your child is claimed on someone else’s taxes, contact us for guidance
  • Additional documents may be requested to verify income and residency, but cannot replace the required documents above
  • Applications from families above our income limit are rarely accepted. Extenuating circumstances should only be included if truly extraordinary.
  • We do not accept W-2s, 1099s, bank statements, 1040s from before 2024, SSI award letters older than 90 days, Social Security, SSDI, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), or Apple Health.

Referral Letters should come from professionals who are qualified to recommend items or services related to their area of work.   Qualified professionals include doctors, therapist, SP ED teachers, etc. )

 

Must recommend all services or equipment you are requesting as a medical necessity.

 

Each letter must: 

 

  1. Be dated within one year
  2. On official letterhead from the service provider
  3. Signed (digital signatures are accepted)
  4. Clearly explain how each item or services will support your child’s autism treatment (a list of items is not accepted without explanation)
  5. If a young adult does not have access to the professionals listed above, we can accept a referral letter from a social worker 

 

💡Tip: An accepted professional who diagnoses autism can confirm the diagnosis and provide the referral in the same letter.

Before You Apply

 

1. Choose your request:

a) you can select up to 3 types of items or services. Therapeutic & Safety Equipment, Therapy, Services, Camps or Assisted Technology. 

b) You may request up to 20 items total from no more than 3 vendors.

c) We recommend choosing larger, more meaningful items to make the biggest impact.

 

2) Prepare your invoice table

a) you will need to list each item individually, including item name, cost (with tax and shipping) and a direct website link or vendor name.

b) iPads (assistive technology) request will enter their chose from our iPad pack options. These are available below, and when you apply. 

 

3) Gather your invoices, if applicable.

a) for services, camps or therapies, an invoice or estimate is required.

b) for therapeutic equipment & safety equipment, an invoice is only required IF it is a specialty item with prepared quote ( e.g,, Spring Free Trampoline, fencing)

c) please do not upload general website lists. You will enter the website links into the invoice table provided online.

 

General Guidelines 

  • Grants cannot exceed $1,000 total including tax and shipping.
  • Only items listed in the referral letter will be reviewed.
  • We purchase all services and equipment directly and ship any equipment to your home – funds are not given to families.
  • Ben’s Fund can NOT register the applicant for services.
  • We purchase all items at once and make a one-time lump sum payment to the service provider. Need suggestions on what’s eligible ?

  • Determine Eligibility: The child or young adult must be between the ages of 0–25, live in Washington State, have an Autism diagnosis, and demonstrate financial need for therapeutic services or equipment.

 

  • Discuss your child’s needs with your service provider to determine what will make the biggest impact to apply for.

 

  • Look up the items or services you want to request, ensure any services align with our timeline and check our list to make sure they are eligible.

 

  • Gather all required documents (family story, proof of diagnosis, 1040 or SSI award letter, referral letter, and invoices).

 

  •  Prepare Your Documents
    We only accept one file for each upload.
    • If your document has more than one page, you must upload it as a PDF or Word file.

 

  • Organize your files: We suggest saving all documents in one folder so you’re ready to apply.

 

  • Mark your calendar with the application opening dates so you’re ready to apply: January 5, April 1, July 6, October 1.
  • Create an account on the Submittable platform. Service providers can NOT apply on your behalf.

 

  • Separate applications: Submit a separate application for each child if you are applying for more than one. 

 

  •  Upload Your Documents
    We only accept one file for each upload.
    • If your document has more than one page, you must upload it as a PDF or Word file.
    • If your document is only one page, you can upload a JPEG photo, but it must be clear, easy to read, centered, cropped, and have no background showing.
    • If you are uploading a 1040 tax return, you must include both pages in one file. Because of this, you cannot upload a JPEG for a 1040
  • Save your work frequently: The system does automatically save, but make sure to save your progress as you go.

 

  • Submit when ready: Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation email.

 

  • Our application closes when we receive our max amount of applications, which can happen quickly. Try to submit as soon as possible. 

 

  • If you don't submit an application in time but start one, you can resume your draft application the next quarter within the calendar year. 
  • Review Timeline:
    Completed applications are estimated to be reviewed, and decisions made, within 90 days of receiving your complete application.

 

  • Status Updates:

While we do send your emails along the application process, you can also log in to your Submittable account to track the status of your application. 

 

  • Incomplete Applications:
    If we require additional documents, we will contact you by email. If an application is not complete before we receive our max number of applications, you will need to resubmit the following quarter.  

 

 

  • Notifications
    You will be notified by email of decision through Submittable.  Please check all folders, including spam/junk folders or log into your account for updates. You can use these emails to communicate with us, and attach any requested documents. 

 

  • You will receive an email no matter the outcome of your grant. Please read your letter in entirety. 
  • Award Process:

Ben’s Fund purchases items directly from vendors.

All items are purchased at once.

Services are paid in one lump-sum payment to the provider.

 

  • Applying Again

You may apply for another grant one year from the anniversary date listed in your award letter.


💡Tip: Be sure to save your award letter—you’ll need it to determine when you’re eligible to apply again.

FAQ’s

How often can I get a grant?

You may be awarded a grant once a year (365 days). 

What can this grant be used for?

Ben's Fund Grants are available for  services or equipment that it will directly assist the child or young adult’s autism treatment.

What can this grant NOT be used for
Can organizations, businesses, or nonprofits apply for the grant for themselves?

No. Ben's Fund Grants are specifically for children or young adults with autism.  If you would like to collaborate or fundraise with Ben's Fund, please contact us. 

Can service providers apply for the grant for a client?

No. Families must apply create an account and apply for themselves. Services providers are welcome to assist families in gathering their documents or preparing their application. If services providers need to communicate with us regarding an application, the family will need to fill out our ROI. 

What if I don’t file taxes or don’t receive SSI?

If you don’t file taxes or receive SSI, you’ll need to obtain one of these documents before applying.

What if my child is not listed on my taxes?

We will need to see income verification for the parent who claims your child, and/or a court ordered tax filing agreement. We may ask for both. 

Who can write the referral letter?

The referral letter should be written by a qualified professional such as a doctor, therapist, special education teacher, or other professional supporting your child’s autism treatment.

The items they refer must be within their professional qualifications to recommend.

Young adults may submit a letter from a Case Worker or someone similar who supports them. 

What if the item I want exceeds $1,000?

Each grant may not exceed $1,000, including tax and shipping.

If your requested item or service costs more than $1,000, you must first confirm with the vendor that they accept split payments, and then provide us with those details before applying in writing. 

For siblings, grants may be combined for a single shared item (example two siblings, one trampoline for $2,000).

However, funds cannot be transferred between siblings or used to increase one child’s grant amount.

What if there is no tax on the website for the item I want?

Sales tax is required for all purchases shipped to Washington State, even if it is not added on the vendor’s website. This requirement is non-negotiable .

How long does it take to get a grant?

If you submitted a complete application, you should receive a decision within 90 days (1 quarter). If your application was submitted incomplete, and you complete your application over time, your application may not be reviewed until the following quarter. 

If you are applying for a Summer Camp, you must apply during 1st ( Jan 1.) or 2nd (Apr. 1) Quarters. 

 

 

I feel uneasy submitting my tax return because my Social Security number is on it. What can I do?

Please redact all SSN's on your financial documents. They are not required to apply for a grant.  

I have more than one child with autism, do I need to submit an indvidual application for each?

Yes.  You will create ONE Submittable account and can apply for multiple children.

You may combine funds to cover a high-cost item for them to share. Please indicate this in your family story. 

What if I submit an application in time before the application closes , but it is missing reuqired information ?

We accept a certain amount of COMPLETE grants per quarter. If your application was successfully submitted, but missing information, we will follow up by email with the missing information. However, your spot is not saved. If we receive our maximum amount of complete applications before you complete yours, you will need to apply next quarter.  

What if I start an application, but do not complete it before the application closes?

Draft applications on Submittable can be resumed when our grant opens the following quarter within the calendar year. 

If you do resume your application, some documents may be out of date, such as financial documents. Please make sure to review our updated requirements on our website. 

December 31, all draft applications expire. 

Section
